What about insurance and excess? Do I need to buy extra insurance at the rental desk?

Your rental price already includes basic insurance cover — typically Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection. However, these come with an EXCESS amount, which is the maximum you could be charged if the car is damaged or stolen. The excess amount varies by supplier and vehicle type, typically ranging from €500 to €2,000. This amount is held as a deposit on your credit card when you collect the vehicle. At the desk, the supplier will likely offer you additional insurance to reduce or eliminate the excess. This is optional and can be expensive (€10-25 per day). You are under no obligation to buy it. Alternatively, you can purchase standalone excess insurance from a third-party provider before your trip, which is usually much cheaper (around €3-5 per day) and covers the excess amount if you need to claim. Always read the "Important Information" for your chosen vehicle to understand exactly what is and isn't covered.
